Funded by an Oregon Conservation Innovation Grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, this project aims to bring American Farmland Trust’s innovative Women for the Land Learning Circle programming to women ranchers and ranchland owners in Northeast Oregon (particularly Union, Baker, and Wallowa Counties) to advance soil health and rancher resilience. Empowering women in ranching with useful tools and tactics, including USDA NRCS resources related to soil quality and climate resilience, can not only make their ranches less vulnerable but could provide models for adoption of agricultural conservation practices that could be utilized by women in agriculture and ranching across the state.
Our first learning circle was held in Wallowa, OR. Ranchers from the area gathered for a day of learning and community building at 6 Ranch, where Liza Jane McAlister and her daughter Adele Schott are the 5 th and 6 th generations of ranchers on the land.
