Educational Team - Transitioning Land to a New Generation

Meet our Project Partners

The Educational Team is supported by the Educational Team Advisory Committee. All together comprised of 19 partner farmers and national farm transfer experts who have wide-ranging experiences. Members will advise on the development of core competencies and learning objectives, provide input on curriculum development, identify and review training curricula and resources, suggest ways to fill gaps, and inform the delivery of trainings and dissemination of materials.

AFT Staff

In addition to our partners, many AFT staff will help guide curriculum development and implementation.

Jerry heads AFT\u2019s efforts to help landowners fully understand their options for land transfer. This includes directing an AFT program that accepts gifts of the land that will then be used to support the next generation of farmers. He previously served as AFT\u2019s northeast director. During his career, he has worked on a range of agricultural, conservation, farm transfer, and rural development issues. Jerry was the associate director of the Local Economies Project of the New World Foundation, where he helped launch LEP\u2019s Hudson Valley Farm Hub initiative, a 1,200-acre teaching, research, and demonstration farm.\u00a0 Before that, he served as a deputy commissioner for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, with program responsibility for food policy, food safety, dairy, and agricultural protection. He grew up on a fourth-generation dairy farm in central New York that his brother now owns. Jerry earned his degree from Cornell\u2019s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He later graduated from Cornell Law School. He is a member of the New York State Bar and the American Agricultural Law Association.\u00a0 <\/span> <\/span> \u00a0<\/span> <\/span>","post_title":"Jerry Policies to Help Beginning Farmers Succeed in Agriculture,\u201d and leads AFT\u2019s\u00a0<\/span> <\/span> efforts to train trainers and build a network of service providers to help beginners secure land and succeed in agriculture<\/span> <\/span> .\u00a0<\/span> <\/span> Freedgood<\/span> <\/span> \u00a0co-authored AFT\u2019s \u201cFarms Under Threat\u201d report. She was a co-PI of a USDA-NIFA supported project \u201cGrowing Food Connections,\u201d and published \u201cGrowing Local: A Community Guide to Planning for Agriculture and Food Systems\u201d to strengthen local economies and improve community food security.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span> She<\/span> <\/span> is a long-time member of the American Planning Association. She served on USDA\u2019s Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program Grant Review Board and the USDA-Secretary Vilsack\u2019s Land Tenure Advisory Committee. She is also a founding member of North American Food <\/span> <\/span> Systems Network and<\/span> <\/span> \u00a0serves on the Advisory Board and Editorial Committee of the Journal of Agriculture Food Systems and Community Development and the Network Committee of Food Solutions New England.<\/span> <\/span> \u00a0<\/span> <\/span> She<\/span> <\/span> \u00a0holds a Master of Arts in urban and The Educational Team on this page are partners in AFT’s 2020 Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grant (award #2020-49400-33257) from the United States Department of Agriculture/National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA). Our 3-year project proposal, Transitioning Land to a New Generation: Preparing Trainers to Help Facilitate Transfer will foster positive communication skills between landowners and land seekers and continue building a support network among farm and ranch service providers.
